The Sylvia Plath Cookbook: A Satire

Sugar Glider Press is proud to announce the official release of Eckhard Gerdes’ magnificent short work, The Sylvia Plath Cookbook: A Satire.  Accompanied by photography from our own Leon Ward, Eckhard’s first published piece on Sugar Glider is every inch as strong as you’d expect it be.  Eckhard is of course no newcomer to the art of literature, and he is one of the few dedicates who still manage to keep every new thing they write fresh and alive.  Sylvia may not be the latest in his rich bibliography, but it does document his enormous talent, even in the condensed formats with which Sugar Glider works.

Leon Ward, however, is a newcomer to the world of publishing.  An accomplished photographer for many years, he has only recently decided to follow this calling more seriously – and thank god for us!  His lens has captured a perfect set of visual representations of Eckhard’s intent.  Congrats to both writer and artist.

Hopefully we can get a bit of steam up and get a few of our upcoming works completed and ready for publication as well.  Stay tuned for full release details!!!

Mid-May Update

While matters outside of Sugar Glider have been taking up far too much of our time recently, we have, with the aid of booze, been able to decide a plan to get Sugar Glider back up to date.  We currently have two titles that need our attention – alterations to the font size of ‘Only in Brisbane’ and the publication of the trade and handmade editions of Eckhard Gerdes’ work.  Time has been set aside for the completion of these two goals and once this is acheived, we will finally be able to turn our thoughts to what comes next in the series.  For now, we will stay with the ‘Introduces…’ series, but novels are in the works, although these are unlikely to see publication for a few years yet.

Preliminary work has been completed on a rough draft of an Angus Galloway review, which will see print next year in essay format.

Work on a series of erotica is also planned; Anais Nin will serve as a primary influence on the direction of this series.

Ben Pullar is currently in planning mode for his debut on Sugar Glider.  Again, expect something sometime next year.

While we have big plans for Sugar Glider, we regret that time is just not on our side at the moment.  Still, the foundations have been laid and when things do start to get moving, they are likely to move very fast.  So watch this space!

Update

It seems that every new post we do get the time to add, it is simply an apology for the overall lack of posts.  Sugar Glider Press is big in our minds, but in practical every day terms, it is just not working out that way.  We’re not going away, just working a little slower than we would otherwise prefer.

The Epub version of Only in Brisbane has not been approved for release due to several technical issues with the formatting.  With our current resources, the decision was made to abandon Epub as a format altogether as, technical problems aside, it does not fit the overall Sugar Glider aesthetic.  The focus shall remain on budget edition paperbacks and our special edition handmade books.

Regarding the handmade books, the word back to our ears is that the print is a little too small.  We are reluctant to further tamper with the Only in Brisbane template as it is as close to perfect as it can possibly be; future editions, including Eckhard’s upcoming work, will contain an enlarged font size.

Eckhard’s work is currently receiving its artwork.  It is at this juncture Sugar Glider Press would like to introduce Leon Ward to our audience as a new and important member of our team.  Leon brings a clever eye to Sugar Glider and we know that his photography will give our books the image we want.  We have given him free reign over his designs – the covers that will grace future Sugar Glider works will be all his own work, from the initial concept to the final editing.

Ben Pullar is also hard at work planning an innovative new collection for Sugar Glider.  While it will be ready when it is ready, it will be sooner rather than later.  Whether it is the next book, or the one following, is yet to be determined; whichever number it shall assume in the line-up, it won’t be too far along.

Only in Brisbane – Epub version

Yes, the epub version of Only in Brisbane is now available.  That concludes the run for our first release!  We are all very excited for Peter and hope that the book brings him the notoriety he deserves.  Next up, Eckhard Gerdes!

By the way, handmade editions of Only in Brisbane will be limited to twenty – if you would like a copy, please contact us at sugargliderpress@gmail.com.  Enjoy!

And Finally…News!!!

We’ve been away from our tasks at Sugar Glider Press for a good month now.  In short, we’ve done little work on any of our writing projects and commitments for too long due to less artistic concerns.  Our resident artist is busy with a new baby, several of our major contributors are busy with the new school year (teaching is a common theme here at Sugar Glider Press) and everyone else has otherwise just been caught out by life in general.  But excuses can no longer be made – there is ‘Only in Brisbane’ to get done and the next work in the series to ready (Eckhard Gerdes, of the Journal of Experimental Fiction, has a clever little piece for us).  Photos of the completed ‘Only in Brisbane’ will be available on the site this weekend, we promise, as will full order details.

Peaches and Leah

Several years ago, the two children of one of our writers got together and brainstormed the basis for what would become a simple but fun children’s book.  Satsuki Ward did the illustrations to a text by Dominic Ward – it was a fun project from start to finish.  Eric and Eyre Ward both worked together to develop the central themes of the book: Peaches was Eyre’s contribution while Leah was all Eric.  Two dinosaurs, Peaches and Leah decided one day to eat the moon.  Setting off for the tall tree on the nearby hill from where they knew they stood the best chance of catching the elusive disk, the book follows their trek through their jungle neighbourhood until their disappointment right on top of the hill.  We are not about to give away what that disappointment might have been!
